The picks come out better when we know a few things up front. Not because we're nosy, and not because you did anything wrong by leaving them out. It's just that a stylist working with a little more context sends a first round that actually lands, instead of a good-but-not-quite round that needs a second pass.
So here are the four details that quietly make the biggest difference. None of them take long to share, and all of them save you time on the back end.
"I need some fall pieces" and "I need three tops I can wear to work but also chase a toddler in" are two very different requests. Both are welcome. The second one just gets you there faster.
When you tell us the real occasions, drop-off, a Friday at the office, a dinner out that isn't quite fancy, we're picking against a specific life instead of a vague vibe. That's the whole reason we ask about your week before we recommend anything.
The best version of this is boring and specific. "Something I can wear to my kid's afternoon program and then go grab dinner without changing." That sentence does more for us than a whole mood board.
Some people run warm. Some people can't stand anything stiff around the waist. Some fabrics feel great in the fitting room and start bugging you two hours in, and you already know which ones those are for you.
Tell us. If polyester makes you overheat, if you live in soft knits and won't wear anything that needs ironing, if tags at the neck drive you up a wall, that's real information. We'd rather build around what you actually reach for than guess and hope.
This is also where a lot of comfort lives. A piece can be cute and still be the thing you avoid, and we want to send you the ones you'll grab on a Tuesday without thinking about it.
You probably have a handful of pieces you wear on repeat. The jeans that fit right, the jacket that goes with everything, the shoes you actually walk in. If you tell us what those are, we can send picks that slot in next to them instead of floating on their own.
That's the difference between one great top and one great top plus three ways to wear it with what you own. Fewer new pieces, more outfits. That's the point of building a wardrobe you can mix and match.
A quick note or a photo of a couple of go-to items is plenty. You don't have to inventory your whole closet.
Money's part of styling, and pretending it isn't just wastes everyone's time. If you're looking to add two solid pieces this season, say two. If you're open to a statement piece but only one, tell us that too.
We'd genuinely rather send you a tighter, on-target round than a big spread you have to sort through and feel guilty trimming. Nobody at RubyClaire is trying to talk you into more than you came for. The whole appeal of having a real person on your side is that we can work inside whatever you've got in mind.
And if your answer shifts later, that's fine. Fall might be "just a couple of things" and then a holiday event comes up and the ask changes. We adjust.
Just tell us where you're starting.
None of this needs to be a formal intake. A few sentences in a text does the job, and honestly the offhand details are often the most useful ones. The way you describe a piece you already love tells us more than any dropdown menu could.
Think of it less like filling out a form and more like telling a friend what you're after. You wouldn't hand a friend a spreadsheet. You'd say "I need something for this thing, I hate anything scratchy, and I already have the pants."
That's exactly the level we're after.
The reason we lean on your input is simple. We can pick beautifully in a vacuum, but we pick for you when you let us in on the details only you know. Your schedule, your comfort deal-breakers, your favorites, your budget for the season.
Tell us the occasion, the fabrics you can't stand, what you already own, and roughly what you want to spend. Four things. A text's worth of typing.
Do that, and the first round shows up closer to right, which means less back-and-forth and more of your time back. That's the trade we're always trying to make in your favor, and these four details are how you help us do it.
